Stepping Out of Our Box

Hoppy Beer Girl

There comes a time in a young brewers life when she must step outside of her box. In my case this proverbial box is in fact a Brewer’s Best kit in a box… but nonetheless JHP and I are climbing out and going for it!

This will be our first attempt at brew recipes, shopping lists, crushing grains and whipping it all together without the help of our trusty and detailed Brewer’s Best instructions and pre-measured ingredient kit. You have to start somewhere though and so it was decided we would find a clone recipe to try with hopes of one day being wise enough to write our own.

I made a strong argument (i.e. I found a recipe and printed it off) for the 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale I’ve mentioned in an earlier post. I love Christmas Ales and feel a 6-pack would be a great addition to my annual neighbor cookies!…

13 Days of Beer Camp Day Across America Day #12 – CANfusion Rye Bock

West Coast Beer Geek

Beer Camp Day 12

Sierra Nevada/Oskar Blues – Beer Camp Across America CANfusion Rye Bock: A collaboration with Oskar Blues, which happens to be one of my favourite breweries, this Rye Bock is brewed at a strength of 7.2 % with 45 IBUs. Oskar Blues was one of the first pioneers of canned craft beer, knowing that moderns cans help preserve the beer flavour for longer and prevent light from striking it this beer travels well across states, provinces and can be easily take many places where bottles can’t go.

Aroma and Appearance: This pours with two fingers of foam and some small centered bubbles can be seen in the golden amber coloured beer. The aroma is sweet, nutty, rye like and herbal.

Flavour: Lots of dark rye bread up front with earth and nuts in the middle, a touch boozy and more sweet malt follow only to be finished with a tangy citrus…

LoverBeer – Marche ‘L Re 2011 Review

Drews Brews Reviews

LoverBeerAll You Need to Know

Brewery: LoverBeer
Style: Sour RIS
ABV: 8.5%
Cost: ???? (12oz)
Glassware: Snifter
Temp: 50°F
Availability: Year Round
Purchased@: Hunger N Thirst

Quick Take: This is the KFC bowl of beers. A mish mash of flavors and aromas, one has to wonder if this was brewed from the runoff from other beers along with a pot of day old coffee and the leavings of a tossed salad. Glad to try it, but a beer for the adventurous only as the cost vs risk is far too financially weighted for what you get.

Brew Facts: I will simply list the ingredients/brew process of this Russian Imperial Stout as that is interesting enough: coffee, rhubarb, saffron, cinchona (shrub/tree with medicinal bark), gentian (another medicinal plant also know as bitter root), and spices, aged in oak barrels for 12 months that also has a sour element. Oh those Italians…

Artesian – The World’s Best Bar?

Dips Dines

For 2 years running now, Artesian has taken home the crown of ‘World’s Best Bar’ awarded by Drinks International magazine.  A track record like that meant i just had to see what all the fuss was about, so i stopped by for some pre-dinner drinks.

Artesian is housed at the Langham Hotel on Portland Place (right near Oxford Circus) & inside, its design, style & vibe are all fab.  The lounge bar occupies a chic space with a very nice balance of subtle grandeur and cosiness.

I’ll admit i was a tad apprehensive beforehand, expecting the atmosphere might be somewhat flat & stuff, akin to several other swanky hotel bars in town – in fact i was pleasantly surprised.  Upon arriving, with no table seats available we were kindly asked to perch at the bar until a space opened up.  To my surprise (given the bar looked packed), the wait was less than 10 mins for a table in the end – people seem to…

Review: Colaba Social

GlobeHopper

inside_1_1411552557_640x640
Being in your late 20s, going out drinking on a Saturday night hardly seems appealing. Battling drunk crowd, waiting in queues for drinks and the blaring music at pubs is not my idea of fun. But the much-talked about Colaba Social had to be given a try. So, we decided to check out the place on a Saturday afternoon.

After successfully running in cities such as Delhi and Bangalore, Social has opened in Mumbai in one of the posh areas of the city. Located behind Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Colaba Social is a mix of many things. It’s a café during the day, a pub at night and also promotes itself to be a hub for freelancers who can come and work there.

Despite being a Saturday afternoon, it was buzzing with all kinds of people ─ college students, couples, selfie-obsessed teenagers and middle-aged high society aunties. While the décor…
