Helena park stThe breweries in Montana’s capital city are a reflection of the town itself, or so it seems to me. It’s not the largest or showiest town. It doesn’t have the most dramatic scenery or the most gilded history. It’s a mid-size town nestled up against mid-sized mountains. It has some architecture of note (including the capitol, of course), a small college, and some lovely parks and trails both in and out of town. The most notable thing to me, though, is that the downtown isn’t flat, like so many of Montana’s downtowns. It rests in the foothills, giving the sense that there are hidden treasures around the bend because you can’t see from one end of the street to the other.

Helena has two breweries, which seems like just enough. They are both well established and well respected. Like the town, they aren’t outwardly flashy, but are well worth exploring. Before you…
