DUBHE: Imperial Black IPA

Dubhe comes from Utah based brewery Unita. This beer is the first beer from Unita I have had and one of the few black ales I have had. The nose is big, a good deal of grapefruit citrus and mellow dark chocolate in the background. The taste is dominated by the hoppy bitterness of an IPA and the roast malt bitterness of stout. It starts with roast smoothness of a stout then goes into a really interesting almost vegetable taste most likely from the hemp seed it made with before finishing with a duel bitter bash of hops and roast malts that lingers for some time. My first thought when I first tasted this beer was that it was really well made. While dominated by bitterness all the flavors come together really well, and is very unique as well as familiar.
